Our Charity of Choice

On September 3rd of 2019 I was diagnosed with stage 4 of a rare form of Cancer called Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor or GIST for short. It is a cancer that is very rare. Only 400 to 500 Canadians and 4000 to 6000 Americans are diagnosed with GIST each year.

I believe I am very lucky as I have a positive outlook and in my opinion an exceptional sense of humour. I believe this has given me an advantage in dealing with the emotional, physical and financial burdens that having Cancer can inflict on a family. Unfortunately through my journey with Cancer thus far, I have seen some things that have affected me. I've seen people at the Tom Baker Cancer Center that don't have some of the advantages that I have. I've seen people break down and emotional in the waiting room after finding out that they have Cancer, I've seen the physical toll that Cancer takes on some people, and I can only imagine the financial toll that this has on people and their families that don't have the luck to have the advantages that we have.

The expenses of having something like Cancer are stressful for a family that only wants to be dealing with getting their loved ones taken care of. Little things like the cost of parking while getting treatments and oncologist consultations, paying for letters to insurance companies from doctors, additional medications that may not be covered all while not being able to work adds up both financially and emotionally.

I want to help out the families that for one reason or other can't afford the basic needs like bills or living expenses. Thus I have chosen to donate 20% of all sales at Enlightened Images to the "Helping Families Handle Cancer Foundation". http://helpingfamilieshandlecancer.com/

Helping Families Handle Cancer was founded in 2008. We are a Not-For-Profit Organization specifically designed to aid families financially while they are dealing with cancer. Cancer creates an enormous strain on a family, both emotionally and financially. We aim to alleviate some of this stress by providing monetary support to those in need. Having a child with a life threatening illness such as cancer puts much additional stress on a marriage, and often contributes to divorce or separation. This stress can also cause temporary or long term health issues for the parent(s).

It is our hope that a family afflicted by cancer, can put their energy into caring for their child, instead of struggling to pay bills or ordinary living expenses.

Helping Families Handle Cancer dedicates our time to single parents or families living on one income.

We are excited about this foundation, as no other organization exists to help families with these specific needs.

Helping Families Handle Cancer assists families who have been referred by social workers from Alberta Children’s Hospital. The success of our foundation rests on the enthusiasm, dedication, and compassion of our volunteers, and on people like you. Read more about how to get involved.
